Happy Halloween! Scaring Myself Silly After "The Blair Witch Project"

The Blair Witch Project is a movie you either love or hate, and the hate is out there for it. I know this, but I don't care. It was special for me since I went to college in that area. I new every ghost legend in Burkittsville and I'd never heard of the Blair Witch. I immediately knew it wasn't real. Still, the movie scared the piss out of me. I saw it when my husband was away on a business trip so I was alone in the house. After the movie I went for a walk in Dogtown near my home. That's an old, five mile deserted former Colonial settlement stuck in the middle of the woods. If you've seen Blair Witch, you can guess where my story is going.

I was fine until I was on my way out of the woods. Some kind of animal shrieked high up in the trees and I couldn't pinpoint exactly where it was coming from. I only knew it was following me and getting closer. It was also getting dark and I was terrified. I high-tailed it out of the woods, nearly taking the wrong hiking path farther into rocky terrain. When I finally reached familiar territory I felt relieved, especially since that high-pitched shrieking stopped moving. I was on my way out of the woods but that shriek kept back. Every time I walk in Dogtown I think about that high-pitched shrieking and I wonder what it was. It wasn't an owl. I've heard owls before. I had no idea what it was.

Years later, I think I discovered what I heard. It may have been a fisher cat. This is what a fisher cat sounds like:

Imagine that following you in the middle of the woods when it's getting dark outside and you're completely alone. I hear fisher cats are nasty, mean creatures, too. I'm glad I didn't run into it.

Halloween Blog Tour - Welcome L. C. Hu

And a Succubus at the Kissing Booth

Happy nearly-Halloween everyone!  Thanks to Elizabeth Black for having me by!

Halloween's one of my favorite holidays for many, many reasons. You might say I was born under a Halloween star.  This year, my Halloween treat is the release of The Midnight Carnival: One Night Only, a collection of thirteen interrelated short stories that follow one night--Halloween--at the strange carnival.

The Midnight Carnival turns up in small, haunted towns all over the country, and its staff are more than they seem at first glance.  With a demon manning security, vampires, ghosts, and psychics on the midway, and faeries and werewolves under the big top, you never know what you'll get when you visit--or if you'll be able to leave at all.

So, to kick off the holiday fun, I'm interviewing the resident kissing booth girl and cambion Crhel.  (Thank you to Ashley Garst for relaying Crhel's answers!)

Hello Crhel!  That's an interesting name you've got there!  How exactly DO you pronounce it?

You just say it? Crhel. CRHEL. Why is that so hard for everyone? CRRRRHEELLL. Crhel. Crhel? It's a pretty name, I hate how all you humans mess it up.

And you're a cambion, right?  Half-succubus, half-human.  Who were your parents? Where did you spend more time when you were growing up, in the human world, or the demonic one?

I don't know who my mother was -- some human. But my daddy is Asmodeus, a prince of Hell. Which kind of makes me a princess, I guess? I grew up in Hell. This is my first time in the human world. It's OK, I guess. The Oreos are good, though.

You run the kissing booth.  What's the best kiss you've gotten there?  The worst kiss?

The best kiss I've gotten is from my human, Rylee. Don't tell him I called him a human, he doesn't like that. He wants me to call him my boyfriend, but isn't that kind of the same thing? The worst kiss was from this one guy who used way too much tongue. It was more like slobbering all over my face. Ew.

As a cambion, what's working the kissing booth like?  An endless line of say, cheetos all lined up for your snacking pleasure? A neverending tease?

It's nice when I have a healthy diet. It's kind of like... Rylee took me to the grocery store once and they have people standing around holding out these little trays with things with little sticks through them that he told me were tooth picks but I don't like them because you can't eat them but anyway, it's kind of like that. I get to nibble on people and see how good they would taste if I had more than just a kiss.

So you were recently introduced to Halloween--something these good folks'll get to read about in  One Night Only!.  Are there any Halloween-like celebrations you grew up with?

No, we don't have many holidays in Hell. Before I came up here, I thought being in Hell was great, and now? Well, being in Hell is still great, but there are still some neat things about the human world too. Like candy! Candy is the best. I don't know why you keep it all just for one day. Halloween should be every  day. Just like Oreos should be every day.

Anything else you'd like to tell us?

I like Oreos?

"When The Veil Is Thin" web site:

"Alicia" is a story close to my heart, since I enjoy horror but I also enjoy writing romances. So I combined the two in "Alicia".

Blurb for "Alicia":

When the love of his life, Alicia, calls him in the middle of the night to report she had been raped, Eric drops everything to come to her rescue. She takes him on an eerie ride through turbulent hours he can't quite comprehend. Alicia may need his help, but her situation is not what it seems.

Rape is a tough topic to tackle, so to add a horrific eerieness to the entire ordeal makes it even more confusing and frightening. Eric learns as much about himself as he does about Alicia as he helps her through her trauma. This book is available at the Mocha Memoirs Press web site as well as the regular ebook distributors.

Halloween Blog Tour - Welcome Justine Graykin

Good lord, what am I doing here?

This place is dark and scary, filled with strange creatures.  I feel like Brad and Janet wandering haplessly into the Frankenfurter’s castle.  Like I walked into a Jen Pelland reading when I was looking for Vonnie Winslow Crist.

You see, I write warm, uplifting, anti-dystopian stories which range from the gentle and whimsical to the soaringly idealistic.  I infuse my work with a sense of humor, and I prefer to leave my characters discreetly at the bedroom door, averting my gaze from their intimacies with a slight blush.  I don’t write erotica, and I certainly don’t write horror.

No, wait, that’s not quite true.  Once I wrote a story called “Chimera.”

It was about Morgan Kaiser-Caine.  They—and I don’t use the pronoun simply to be genderless; Morgan is indeed two people in one body—has a medical condition called tetragametic chimerism.  Twins fused in the womb, united into a single body.  Test the DNA from a drop of blood, and you would find one.  Analyze a sample of liver cells, you would find the other.  Two beings occupying the same space, two minds occupying the same brain, awash in the same chemicals, understanding the same things, the cells of one intimately pressed up against the cells of the other in perfect cooperative harmony.

In Morgan’s case the two persons are male and female.  The result is an exquisite hermaphrodite.  Unique in that, unlike most hermaphrodites, both sets of sexual organs coexist, fully functional.  A divine freak.  Beautiful, brilliant, eloquent, and united against a world which has relegated them to the role of sideshow spectacle and scientific curiosity.  They need allies.  Not merely to survive, but to overcome.  Because they have deduced that they are the next enormous step in evolution, the ultimate resolution to the battle of the sexes.  They are the progenitors of a race that shall replace monosexual beings.

By force if necessary.

This is not just a horror story because of the beautiful monster at its center, but because Morgan makes a such a good case for themselves.  Logical.  It is difficult to dispute the elegant efficiency of an organism which can exploit the advantages of sexual reproduction while dispensing with its drawbacks.  Chillingly Nietzschean.

And, oh the erotic possibilities, particularly to the bisexual professor who becomes fascinated by Morgan and is seduced by them.

But what would Morgan care for true love when they already have each other?

Also, unlike most of my other stories, this one does not end on a positive, uplifting note.  The story squats among my other published works, grinning diabolically, Halloween among my holidays.  Honestly, I don’t know what possessed me.

But if you are curious, you can find a link to it on my website at justinegraykin.com.  And now, as honored as I am to be a guest here, I really must be going.  This place is quite charming, I’m sure, but more than a bit unsettling.
