BLURB
Don't Call Me Baby is a fast-paced, quick-witted, sexy, novel about a young woman exploring her sexuality and the cultural morĂ©s she collides with on a daily basis.
It's 1983 in Maryland and Catherine Stone is sex on wheels. She plays the field the way men have done for aeons. Not content to strive for her MRS degree like so many young women her age, she seduces men of all stripes – married college professors, theatre students, virgins, complete strangers who intrigue her. She has already cost one man his job.
She asks herself lots of questions on her search to enjoy her sexuality. Why don't other women enjoy their sex as much as she does? Why do so many women and men look down on sexually free women, calling them sluts while sexually free men are called studs and Lotharios? She bucks at the double standards! Catherine has made no commitment to any man. She's free to explore and she gladly does so. No man can tie her down and no woman's judgment will stop her from playing the field to her heart's content.
Does she meet her match in a new man who introduces her to sexual bliss she had never before experienced? When she tries multiple partners and bondage for the first time as a submissive, she believes she's found the sexual bliss she is looking for – and with a man who not only introduces her to the fineries in life but also cares about her like no man ever has before.

Moving On—With Kids

One thing readers don’t always see in romances, especially erotic romance, is the single parent who is moving on after a divorce or losing their partner. In part, that’s probably because a romance is supposed to be about a couple meeting and forming a life together, and some readers—and publishers—don’t want to read about the kids. In one of my earlier novellas, Beginner’s Luck (Pink Petal Books 2009), the heroine is divorced and has two children from her first marriage. More than one reviewer commented that since the book was billed as an erotic romance, the fact that the heroine had kids, even though the kids had nothing to do with any of the erotic scenes and didn’t even appear in the majority of the book, squicked them.

Beginner’s Luck was partly based on my then-boyfriend (now husband) and me, and the fact was that I had two kids from my first marriage. I couldn’t write the story without including the heroine’s kids. Believe me, I tried.

While I do understand the logic in not having kids be part of a romance story, I don’t necessarily agree with it. I’m far from the only woman who’s left a bad marriage and has spent time looking for and finally finding her soul mate. It’s nice to read about characters who don’t have any obligations or baggage, but sometimes I’d like to read about someone like me.

My newest release from Pink Petal Books, Help Around the House, is also about a single mother who finds new love. Jodie’s husband passed away two years ago, and since then she has come to depend on her next-door neighbor Todd. Jodie has two young children, and as she and Todd form a relationship she has to weigh what they want with what her children need. While the children don’t appear in a large portion of the story, they are an integral part of it.

I think there is a place in romance for single mothers and fathers to be heroines and heroes, and in those stories, their children would play at least a tiny role. Personally, I don’t see that as a problem. It happens in real life; why not in fiction?

I’m interested in your opinions, readers. Would you read a romance story where kids appear as minor characters (no pun intended)? Or do you think romances shouldn’t include single parents, or at least shouldn’t include those parents’ kids? One commenter will be drawn for a PDF copy of their choice of Beginner’s Luck or Help Around the House.

Beginner’s Luck and Help Around the House are both available from Pink Petal Books http://pinkpetalbooks.com. Find out more about Karenna and her books on her website, http://www.karennacolcroft.com

Slut! Double Standards In Sex and Updates About Don't Call Me Baby

Think about these two scenarios.

Victoria is in her early thirties and has bedded ten men.

Jake is in his early thirties and has had bedded ten women.

Why would many people consider Victoria a slut yet consider Jake a stud? There has long been a double standard regarding men vs. women and their number of sexual partners. Even if a woman is either a virgin or has never had many lovers, if she looks a certain way – as in wearing sexy clothes or wearing too much makeup – or if she flirts too much, people assume she's easy pickings. If a woman is blunt and free about her sexuality, too many men also assume she'll sleep with them. Just because a woman likes sex and openly talks about it or flaunts her looks doesn't mean she puts out to any guy who expects it.

When I was in college I ran into this double standard quite often. I was not promiscuous but I dressed in a sexy manner, flirted, and wore stage makeup every day. It was the only way I knew how to put it on because the first makeup I ever wore was stage makeup. So plenty of guys – and women – thought I'd put out. I didn't. In fact, I was looking for a steady boyfriend but I couldn't find one who didn't want to get in my pants on the first or second date. I was for the most part unattached so I was seen as a threat to my female friends, although I had no intention of stealing their boyfriends. Those guys didn't interest me and I wouldn't do that to my girlfriends. Still, because of the way I looked and how friendly I was, I was seen as a slut. One guy of my acquaintance had lots of female sex partners and he never ran into that kind of judgmental attitude.

Catherine Stone, the protagonist of my novel Don't Call Me Baby, runs into this attitude on a daily basis. Some women feel threatened by her. Some men take her for granted or assume she'll have sex with them because she's so open and honest about her interest in sex and interpersonal relationships. She's searching for love just like anyone else would. Judging her – and any woman – by the number of sex partners she's had is unfair and a double standard since if she were male she'd likely not be judged in such a manner.

Six Sentence Sunday #15 - Don't Call Me Baby

This is my fifteenth Six Sentence Sunday. It's from my new release Don't Call Me "Baby". This novel is about a young woman's coming of age and discovering her sexuality in the wild and crazy 1980s in the U. S. Enjoy my six.
Catherine Stone looked around the amusement park and rides but saw nothing unusual. It was the end of another hot and humid day in Maryland during the summer of 1983. The sun had set behind the trees, casting shadows across the park hiding the car she sat in to some extent. Catherine wished it were a bit darker outside, because she was in constant fear of getting caught, but it was a hot June evening, so that was too much to ask for. Besides, the possibility of getting caught thrilled her, made the encounter all the more exciting for her. Every horn blowing and car pulling in made her hair stand on end.

This book is officially released on September 30, 2011 but you may buy it now. Go to my Don't Call Me Baby page here on my web site (top of page) and my Facebook page for updates. This book is one hell of a sexy ride!

Man Candy Tuesday #14

Now that Hawaii Five-0 is back on, it's time for Man Candy Tuesday again!  In honor of the hot men who appear every Monday on Hawaii Five-0, I've dedicated Tuesdays to the most mouth-watering man candy out there!

My new book Don't Call Me Baby is available now for purchase. Please visit my Don't Call Me Baby page, which is linked at the top of this web site. You'll find a blurb, my book cover, buy links, and excerpts in addition to what's below. Below the man candy is information about the book, including buy links and the blurb. Today's Man Candy Tuesday is dedicated to sexy older men, the type of men who are featured in my book.

I'm not normally into blondes but this one is hot! I love his eyes. Very deep and intense.

There's nothing like a sexy older man in a suit. This is actor David Strathairn.

This is Ephram Zimbalist, Jr., who is the physical influence for my alpha male character Duncan Blake. In Duncan, my protagonist Catherine Stone has met her match.

Just look at that intense expression! Remember Goren Visnjic from E. R.? I like them dark and intense. This guy is the influence for Casey, who becomes Catherine's closest friend.

I'll post more man candy every Tuesday now that Hawaii Five-0 is back on. I can't end this post without a picture of Alex O'Loughlin. Enjoy!

Catherine awakened to feel Duncan putting a blindfold over her face. Frightened, she jerked and raised her hands to her face to remove it.
“Calm down, gorgeous. It's only me. Let's play a game before we get up for the day.”
“What do you have in mind besides making me blind?”
